Don’t you just love the spring? The birds are chirping, the flowers are budding and buyers are beginning to search for their dream home.

Since spring is such a popular season for real estate deals, it would be a good idea to start prepping your home now. Get a head start by making a spring cleaning to-do list, take note of any needed repairs, then put your plan into action. Here are a few tips to help you get started.

1. Out with the old, unused and unnecessary
As consumers, we are all prone to owning a lot of stuff – much of which we don’t need. Take stock of the things that you really love and often use and make plans to get rid of the rest. It might be tough at first, but living a more minimalistic lifestyle will help your home show well. If you don’t feel comfortable throwing away your old belongings, you can sell, trade or donate your goods and get money or maybe even a tax deduction. If you just can’t bear to part with your things, consider putting them away in storage while your home is on the market.

2. Add a fresh coat of paint
If you’ve painted recently, you can probably skip this step, but it never hurts to add a fresh coat. Sticking with neutrals or light colors are usually a safe bet. Bold, dark or dramatic colors may not be appreciated by everyone.

3. Take care of repairs, big and small
Walk around your home, inside and out, and make a list of any needed repairs or maintenance. Are there shingles missing from the roof? Faucets leaking in the bathroom? Write everything down, then take steps to fix each problem one at a time.

4. Love your yard
Spring is a great time to show off your yard and add to your home’s curb appeal. Before spring has sprung, however, you should take steps to ensure a beautiful lawn by adding grass seed, raking up any dead leaves and clearing debris.

5. Clean thoroughly, then regularly
Take your cleaning routine to the next level. Clean out major appliances like the refrigerator and oven. Remove everything from cabinets, drawers and cupboards and wipe them down. Scrub baseboards and door frames to remove any scuffs or stains. After you’ve given your home a thorough cleaning, keep it up until your home sells. If the thought of cleaning makes you cringe, consider hiring a professional cleaning company to do it for you.
