Multiple DFW housing markets are among the nation’s best according to WalletHub. The finance platform ranked 300 U.S. real estate markets using 17 metrics including housing affordability, home value forecasts, and population growth.

  • Frisco topped the list. Moving up from the number-six spot last year, the booming hub scored well for affordable living, ranking as the study’s 11th-cheapest city for phone service, maintenance, and energy costs.
  • McKinney was number-two on the list, getting a high grade for its large share of newly built homes and some of the best livability among cities in Texas. In a separate WalletHub study, McKinney was named a top market for first-time homebuyers.

Denton was fifth on WalletHub’s list, and Allen ranked eighth, while Fort Worth made a strong showing, coming in at number 22 out of a total of 300 markets. Among the larger markets with over 300,000 residents, Fort Worth ranked 5th out of 129.

Dallas Markets Score High for Homebuying

The Dallas Observer identified top local areas based on a balance of livability and affordability.

  • Lake Highlands. Located in Northeast Dallas, this suburban-style neighborhood is coveted for its rolling hills and tranquil streets lined by mature trees. The community has a diverse mix of mid-century ranch-style homes built in the 1960s and 1970s as well as newly constructed single-family homes and townhomes.
  • Pleasant Grove. In Southeast Dallas, Pleasant Grove has long been touted as an “up-and-coming” area, offering a substantial number of ranch-style homes on tree-lined lots close to the Piedmont Ridge Trail.
  • Winnetka Heights. A short drive from Downtown Dallas and located next to the Bishop Arts District, Winnetka Heights has well-maintained Craftsman bungalows and larger prairie-style houses that are often more affordable than similar homes in other historic districts.
  • Lakewood. While pricier than other spots on the list, Lakewood still offers affordability compared to more affluent areas such as nearby Highland Park. The historic neighborhood in East Dallas has a unique urban-suburban mix of Tudor cottages, Craftsman bungalows, and Spanish-style homes on streets shaded by canopies of oaks, elms, and maples.
